How to Measure a Walking Cane Tip for Replacement

How to Measure a Walking Cane Tip for Replacement

A worn rubber tip is only half the problem—you also need the correct fit. Use this simple method to measure the cane shaft and check compatibility.

To choose a replacement cane tip, remove the old tip only if the cane is designed for user replacement, then measure the outside diameter of the bare cane shaft. Do not measure across the worn rubber base. A shaft that measures about 3/4 inch is approximately 19 millimeters, but size alone is not enough—you should also confirm the cane model and attachment type before ordering.

First, Confirm That the Tip Is Replaceable

Not every cane base is meant to come off at home.

A conventional single-point cane may use a removable rubber tip that slides over the end of a round shaft. A self-standing, pivoting, quad, illuminated, or molded base may instead be attached with internal locking parts or factory equipment. Pulling, twisting, cutting, or prying at a fixed base can damage the connection.

Before removing anything, check the product manual or contact the manufacturer. For Rehand products, only models specifically identified as having a replaceable single tip should use a separately sold replacement tip. Other Rehand bases are installed with dedicated fixtures and locking structures and go through three rounds of stability inspection; they are not intended for customer replacement.

What Does “Cane Tip Size” Mean?

Replacement-tip size usually refers to the diameter of the cane shaft that fits inside the rubber tip. It does not refer to the width of the rubber footprint touching the floor.

For example:

Listed size Approximate metric size What to measure
5/8 inch 15.9 mm Outside diameter of the bare shaft
3/4 inch 19.1 mm Outside diameter of the bare shaft
7/8 inch 22.2 mm Outside diameter of the bare shaft
1 inch 25.4 mm Outside diameter of the bare shaft

Manufacturing tolerances and attachment designs vary. A measurement that looks close does not guarantee that a third-party tip will stay securely attached.

How to Measure the Shaft

1. Place the cane on a stable surface

Do not lean on the cane while working. Keep it horizontal on a table or another stable surface.

2. Remove the old tip only if the manual allows it

Pull the removable rubber tip straight off. If it will not move with normal hand pressure, stop. Do not use a knife, lubricant, heat, glue, or power tools.

3. Measure the bare shaft—not the rubber

A digital caliper gives the clearest reading. Place its jaws across the widest part of the round shaft and record the outside diameter. If you only have a ruler, measure straight across the center rather than around the circumference.

4. Measure twice

Rotate the shaft and repeat the measurement. If the readings differ, the tube may be out of round or damaged. Contact the manufacturer before installing a new tip.

5. Match both size and attachment type

Confirm all of the following:

  • the listed inside size of the replacement tip;
  • the measured outside diameter of the cane shaft;
  • the cane model or compatibility list;
  • the shape of the shaft and attachment;
  • whether the manufacturer approves user replacement.

How Should a Replacement Tip Fit?

A compatible push-on tip should seat fully and evenly. It should not rotate freely, rock, or slide off under normal hand pressure.

After installation, place the cane upright without leaning your full weight on it. Check that the tip sits flat, then gently push and pull the tip by hand. If it moves, separates, or leaves part of the shaft exposed, do not use the cane.

MedlinePlus recommends checking cane tips daily and replacing them when worn. It also advises keeping floors clean and dry and using appropriate footwear; a new tip cannot make every surface safe.

Common Measuring Mistakes

  • Measuring the footprint: The bottom of the rubber tip is wider than the shaft and does not determine the replacement size.
  • Measuring over the old rubber: Worn, stretched rubber can produce an inaccurate reading.
  • Assuming “universal” means every cane: Shaft sizes and attachment systems differ.
  • Forcing a near match: A tip that is too small can split or fail to seat; one that is too large may detach.
  • Removing a factory-installed base: Multi-point and pivoting bases may not be customer-serviceable.

Is the Rehand 3/4-Inch Tip Right for Your Cane?

The Rehand replacement product is a black, two-piece pack for a compatible removable 3/4-inch (about 19 mm) round shaft. Check the exact Rehand model listed on the product page before ordering. Do not install it on a Rehand quad, self-standing, pivoting, or cane-chair base unless that exact model is expressly listed as compatible.

If the base is loose, cracked, or missing from a model that is not user-replaceable, stop using the cane and contact Rehand Support rather than attempting a repair.

Final Check Before You Order

You need three matching answers: Is the base designed to be removed? Does the shaft measure the listed size? Is your cane model compatible? If any answer is uncertain, send the product name, a photo of the full cane, and a close-up of the base to the manufacturer before buying.
